Professor Utz Roedig Biography

Utz is a Professor of Networked Embedded Systems within the School of Computing and Communications (SCC) at Lancaster University. He received his PhD from Darmstadt University of Technology (Germany) and before moving to Lancaster he was with University College Cork (Ireland).

Utz pursues research in the area of networked embedded systems which includes Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Application examples of such systems are home automation systems, physical intrusion detection systems, smart cities or wireless sensor systems for factory automation. His work looks at communication mechanisms and software used to construct these systems. An important aspect of his work is to improve security of these systems.

Utz is a founding member of Security Lancaster, an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research recognised by the UK government. His research work has been supported by a number of grants funded by the EU, EPSRC, and directly by industry. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers which are cited over 2300 times. Many of his research outputs have led to patents and commercialisation of research results.
